This is a poem, but I can't submit it as a deviation because the strike tag can only be used in journals (so far). I submitted a help desk ticket about it and they said they'd check it out, but in the meantime:

letter to a rock star

you never knew me but I
kind of wish you did,
you're so glamourous and all.

but you know I spent years of my life
listening to you on the radio,
how does that feel?

fame and fortune, glitz and girls,
you have it all!
even though you didn't ask for it.
and you even get to travel
(one of those employee benefits
of being in the rock star business)
what's it like,
playing the same guitar
in paris, amsterdam, new york
as in shediac, everett, calgary?

I bet it never occurred to you that
there are people out there
who think they know you just because
they watch you on tv
(the late, late, late, late
I forgot how many lates
television talk show
where they ask you the same questions
and you always have different answers).

I think you're
really lucky, you know.
you're even good looking
(some of them aren't, but you are).

but the other night I was thinking.

apart from your fame,
your good looks,
your five thousand forty-one ex-girlfriends
(who aren't quite "ex" girlfriends anymore
when you're back in their town),
your money,
your guitar skills
(and singing too),
your touring savvy ...

apart from all that, you know,
I guess you're just like me.

isn't that interesting?

you are a rock star
but you're just
like
me.

maybe you don't believe me,
maybe that disgusts you a little.

I don't blame you.
(after all I might be just some
poor lazy slob who lives with the frat boys
and eats cold kraft dinner every night)

but you know
I guess when I think about it
you're still a person too
(rock stars aren't another species
although my mother thinks a little differently).

that makes me happy.

sorry if that offends you,
but some of us ordinary people
need something to hand on to
every once in a while.
(it's called perspective)

but I'd love to be a rock star
I'll never be a rock star
Do you think if I tried
can I call you if you're in town?
